True Name: Veelos Pertinax

OCC:  Deacon of Zenshia

Current Level:  3

Age:  early 20s

Birthplace:  Nusquam

Height:  5' 11"

Weight:  185 lbs.

Eyes:  Brown

Hair:  Black

History: Orphaned at a very young age, Pertinax grew up with his older brother and sister-in-law on the family farm near the village of Nusquam, not far from the southern jungle. Just prior to his sixteenth birthday, Pertinax's brother and sister-in-law were killed by brigands while returning from the market. Desperate for help, Pertinax took their bodies to a local healer of dubious reputation. In exchange for a large sum of gold, the healer promised he could restore life to the dead brother and sister-in-law. Pertinax was horrified when the healer instead brought them back as mindless, bloodthirsty zombies and had them attack the boy. Pertinax fought the two off (receiving, in the process, the distinctive scar across his face) and eventually destroyed the shambling corpses. The healer disappeared, leaving a penniless and heartbroken Pertinax to wallow in guilt and self-loathing.

He remained that way for over a year, living off the generosity and pity of the residents of Nusquam, until he heard a wandering priest talk of a monastery in the jungle dedicated to training fighters to hunt the undead. Pertinax made his way to the monastery and spent the next four years studying, learning the ways of the sword, and of magic.

His first mission is accompanying Father Horace and acting as his bodyguard on the journey to Ostium Serpens and beyond.

Personality:  Silent and secretive; Pertinax is haunted by the death of his brother and sister-in-law and takes his mission very seriously (though he has loosened up a bit since he and Father Horace began traveling with the others). He feels responsible for the evil done to his brother and sister-in-law and that he can atone for it by ridding the world of the undead, in whatever form they manifest. He is quite courageous (or perhaps foolhardy) in battle, and often seems unconcerned with his own safety—but never risks the safety of Father Horace. He seems more inclined to ridding the world of the undead through force instead of with magic, though he has recognized of late the usefulness of his magic, and with the help of Father Horace, has dedicated himself to improving his spellcasting ability.

Equipment:  Pertinax wields two silver quaddaras named Percussor and Defensor. Percussor is used primarily for offense, while Defensor is used mainly for defense.  They were a gift from Father Horace, forged by the master smiths of the temple in Ironheart. Since his time on the farm, he has been served by his faithful horse Greyfoot. Pertinax's armor is emblazoned with the symbol of his church.

How Pertinax feels about the other members of the group. . .

Father Horace:  Pertinax views Horace as both a friend and mentor. He is loyal to the priest, obedient, and unhesitating in his defense. Horace has been very helpful in bringing Pertinax out of his self-imposed shell and his spiritual guidance is above reproach. He chafes from time to time under Horace's watchful eye, and wishes the priest would allow him to be more aggressive in hunting down the undead.

Hiryu:  On the one hand, the mystic is steadfast and skilled in combat, and his command of magic, while still a bit limited, has proven invaluable on many an occasion. On the other hand, Hiryu seems a bit too concerned with self-preservation and accumulation of wealth, though not yet to the extent that it has affected his job performance. A clever and talented individual to have on one's side.

Bartlet:  Pertinax likes and appreciates Bartlet's martial skills, his no-nonsense attitude, and his courage. Taken aback by the soldier's propensity for carousing, Pertinax nonetheless trusts Bartlet to be concerned with the good of the group. Tenacious in the extreme, Bartlet does his job well and never complains about the numerous injuries he has borne thus far.

Dee:  Pertinax is consistently amazed by Dee's ability to deal death in a spectacular fashion, all the while maintaining a cool detachment. He feels confident moving into battle with the archer and her bow providing support. She is calm and collected and always in control.

Shoujiki:  The monk has proven himself as a force to be reckoned with. As a scout as well as a warrior, Shoujiki is strong, skilled, and fierce as a tiger. The thing that troubles Pertinax is the monk's apparent lack of sanity. He has been confounded time and again by Shoujiki's inability (or unwillingness) to do the sensible thing. He wonders if the monk will be the eventual death of them all.

Wayland:  Pertinax sees a kindred spirit in the witch-hunting longbowman. Wayland is a skilled archer and a cunning tactician. As with Dee, Wayland and his bow add to Pertinax's confidence in battle. Pertinax also enjoys jamming out on the flute around a campfire with Wayland.
